It’s been a rough week here, not gonna lie, and waking up to sick twin girls with runny noses in no way makes me optimistic about my weekend. It’s going to get worse here before it gets better. As tired as I am, I am at once humbled and inspired by the work of one singer-songwriter, PW Gopal.

The hubs flew off to record one of Gopal’s shows this week and returned with more than a few eye-opening facts about the world of  human trafficking the musician has set his heart on fighting. Gopal, who has worked with International Justice Mission and Not for Sale,  now works to bring awareness to the human slave trade around the world and right here in our own backyard with The Hundred Movement.

Being from Ohio and working with authorities (the FBI) and ministries to set up safe houses for girls rescued from the sex slave trade, Gopal can rattle off an astounding list of statistics with regard to the matter (200,000-300,000 girls enslaved in the U.S. alone, people) and the stories that belong to those who’ve been abducted are so much worse than a Hollywood movie could ever paint. The mission of The Hundred Movement is to have the roughly 322,000 thousand churches across the country “take one life (woman or child) and make them their own” by offering them local “points of exit” from sex and labor trafficking.

This is so real and it so frightening and we really have to take the time to become educated on this. Sure, the government got involved with whole Craigslist crackdown, but that’s apparently nothing compared to the access to girls a high school or even a middle school can offer, where girls are so easily manipulated. And the motivation is there: a pimp can make upwards of $500,000 per year with just a few girls. Imagine the possibilities with more. They’re white, upper class men living in suburban neighborhoods. Their own kids go to school with yours. These guys are patient and smart. They’re willing to put in the time over years to pull in an innocent and already wounded girl.

Yes, it’s disgusting, and it’s really, really happening. If you don’t believe me, listen to Oprah! Or better yet, PLEASE check out the important work of The Hundred Movement in the rehabilitation and healing of these women, and lend your support to abolishing the 21st century slave trade.

And go hug your twin girls. Stat.
